The festival "Voices of History", which emerged in 1991 as a review of the performances of professional theatres in the historical and architectural ensemble of the unique environment of the Vologda Kremlin has long been a hallmark of the Vologda Region, a favourite festival of all theatre-goers.

In 2003 it received an international status. The performances are shown in the open air, in the historical setting of the Vologda Kremlin, which is a point of interest itself.

Besides the performances, master classes, press conferences and meetings with actors are held during the festival.

The Voices of History always attract the most skilful actors and repertory theatres from Moscow, St.Petersburg, Novgorod, Pskov, Vladimir, Arkhangelsk, Samara and other Russian cities. Theatres from USA, Poland, Greece, Italy, Ukraine, Belarus, Slovakia and other countries come to give performances in Vologda. The focus of the festival is on the history of Russia and the world history.

The organisers of the festival are the Vologda Region Government and the Department of Culture of the Vologda Region.
