The St. George Ribbon campaign to distribute black-and-orange ribbons, a symbol of the victory in World War II started in Vologda ahead of Victory Day. It is an annual patriotic event.

Victory Day is one of the most remarkable public events in Russia. It is traditionally celebrated on the 9th of May. The holiday marks the capitulation of Nazi Germany to the Soviet Union in the Second World War in 1945.

The first St. George's Ribbon event took place in 2005. The campaign has become a national tradition. Orange-black ribbons handed out by volunteers in the streets are one more sign of our commemoration of the Great Victory. On this day Russian people also give flowers to veterans in the streets and lay wreaths at war memorial sites.
