The Vologda State Museum-Preserve of History, Architecture and Decorative Arts is situated in the historical centre of the city - the Vologda Kremlin that consists of buildings constructed during four centuries (XVI- XIX). It is one of the largest museums of Russia's North.

It has got eight affiliates:

The Vologda State museum-preserve is a scientific - exploring and educational organization, state storage of artistic, historical, architectural memorials of material and spiritual culture and as well as memorials of nature.

The Vologda Kremlin has an area of more than 10,000 square metres, and it contains natural-science, historical, and art museums, as well as other exhibition halls. The museum fund includes 487840 pieces of art, including ancient icons, manuscripts, early printed books, and articles crafted by Vologda silversmiths. The most valuable collections are the collection of Russian Ancient Art (icons), sculpture, numismatics, Old Russian books and others.

Festivals, concerts and performances are held at the Vologda Kremlin. The museum annually prepares interesting exhibition projects for different groups of visitors.

The museum is annually visited by over 250 thousand people.
