Branko Rakovec, Slovenian Ambassador to Russia arrived in Vologda on an official visit on October 18th. The main objective of the visit is to define guidelines for trade, economic and cultural partnership ties between Slovenia and the Vologda Region.

The Vologda City Administration aims at promoting sister relations with foreign municipalities. Vologda might become a twin city of Slovenian city of Idrija. Town-twinning as a form of municipal international cooperation will contribute to the development of economic cooperation and strengthen cultural ties.

The Slovenian guests noted that they are interested in cooperation with the Vologda Region and Vologda. The trade turnover with the region has grown significantly over the past five years. The Vologda Region ranks second after Moscow among the regions that supply goods to Slovenia. Slovenia ranks 30th among Vologda’s trade partners. Most of the exports from the Vologda Region is made up of mineral fertilizers. The Republic of Slovenia supplies paints and building materials, ferrous metals, metal tools and cutlery to the Vologda Region. Both parties are interested in deepening mutually beneficial cooperation for common development.

Visiting the Lace Museum, Branko Rakovec noted that the Vologda Region and Slovenia can cooperate in lace-making. Slovenia is known for its Idrijan lace. Head of the Vologda Museum-Reserve Yulia Evseeva showed the main exposition of the Lace Museum, told about the peculiarities of Vologda’s lace school, about the origins of lace-making and our lace-makers. The experts of the Vologda Lace Museum also provided on-going lace-making classes with experienced instructors. Thus, the Slovenian guests not only got acquainted with the best exhibits of the museum, but also tried to make laces.

The Vologda Lace Museum has long-standing ties with Slovenian lace makers who always participate in the International Vita Lace Festivals. The Vologda Museum has a close relationship with the municipal museum of Idrija, the main lace centre of Slovenia. In 2018 one of the most valuable crafts from the Vologda Region - laces were on display in the Gewerkenegg Castle, Idrija.

The participants of the meeting also discussed opportunities for cultural, educational and business sessions between Vologda and Slovenia. Branko Rakovets proposed to hold a congress of ambassadors from different countries in Vologda to get acquainted with Vologda's culture.
