While celebrations for Victory Day will be different this year, there are still plenty of ways to mark the occasion.
Huge nationwide plans had been drawn up to mark the anniversary of Victory day at the end of World War Two – but they have had to be scrapped because of the coronavirus lockdown. The coronavirus outbreak means that there will be no street parties, parades or concerts this year on May 9th, but nonetheless there is plenty going on to celebrate.
Alternative ways of commemorating the 75th anniversary of Victory Day have been organised in the Vologda Region as many festive events were cancelled due to the pandemic.
To mark 75 years since Victory in Russia and Europe, fur trees were planted ahead of Victory Day anniversary at Mozhaiskoye settlement, next to Vologda.
The trees were planted by volunteers from a number of local organisations and local government staff working under strict social distancing instruction. Vologda Region Governor Oleg Kuvshinnikov also took part in the tree planting. The fur trees were planted in memory of those from the region who lost their life in the Second World War, totalling 300 trees at the time.
“When restrictions are lifted we do plan to hold festivities in the region to mark the 75th anniversary of Victory Day. But now we hope everyone will have a wonderful Victory Day party at home with family,” said the Governor.
The international campaign “Garden of Remembrance” was launched on March 18 and will last until June 22 of this year. Its organizers are the All-Russian Public Movement “Victory Volunteers” and the Victory Commemoration Fund with support of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Russian Federation and the Federal Forestry Agency. The purpose of the campaign is to plant 27 million trees in memory of 27 million dead during the Great Patriotic War.
In the Vologda Region, the fur trees were planted as part of the campaign in memory of the great feat of almost 200 thousand residents from the Vologda Region who did not return home from the front.
