The UNWTO General Assembly holds its 23rd session in St. Petersburg on 9-13 September 2019. It is the largest event in the global tourism industry. It brings together delegates from more than 130 countries. The UNWTO General Assembly is held under the auspices of the UN, and aims to solve global problems facing the tourism industry. This marks the first time that Russia hosts the event.
The main topics that the Assembly's participants discuss include innovative technologies in the tourism industry to strengthen the environmental sustainability of tourism destinations, the training of professional personnel, and the development of medical and health tourism.
A delegation from Vologda Region led by Deputy Governor Oleg Vasiliev is taking part in 23rd session of the UNWTO General Assembly and St. Petersburg Travel HUB. St. Petersburg Travel HUB is a modern platform for the discussion of key issues of tourism and hospitality industries at the international level, as well as a place where tourist companies will be able to comprehensively present their own tourism opportunities and products and to find new partners among Russian and foreign participants.
The Vologda Region is to present its tourism and cultural potential with a focus on the tourist project Silver Necklace of Russia. Silver Necklace of Russia is implemented with an active support of the Russian Ministry of Culture and the Federal Tourism Agency.
Silver Necklace of Russia is a unique tourism product (brand) consisting of chain of routes crossing ancient Russian cities with unique historical and cultural heritage of Northwest Russia. The Silver Necklace of Russia is a tourist project across 11 regions of the Russian Federation.
The tourist project Silver Necklace of Russia covers the territories of Leningrad, Arkhangelsk, Vologda, Kaliningrad, Murmansk, Pskov, Novgorod regions, Saint Petersburg, the Republic of Karelia and the Komi Republic, Nenets Autonomous Okrug.
Silver Necklace consists of a set of routes that combine historical cities and territories, regional centers, large population points of the Northwestern Federal District, which has the unique monuments of history, culture and nature included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Eight cities of the Vologda Region are part of the Silver Necklace of Russia project. They are Vologda, Cherepovets, Belozersk, Tot’ma, Veliky Ustyug, Vytegra, Kirillov and Ustyuzhna.
The Silver Necklace offers various types of tourism, including cultural and educational tours and pilgrimages, which are popular among Russian tourists.
