Tønder is a city in Denmark (South Jutland) that had an important lace industry in the 17th and 18th centuries. Say the word “lace" and Danes think of Tønder. Lacemaking has always been a specifically Danish industry.

The Tønder Museum has a large collection of laces and lacemaking equipment and publishes books on the art.

The exhibition of delicate Vologda lace will be arranged by the Museum of History and Culture of South Jutland (Denmark), the Vologda State Museum-Preserve, the Vologda lace Museum, the Danish Embassy in Moscow and the Russian Embassy in Denmark.

Vologda lace has won deserved fame and world-wide recognition for its high artistic value, rich ornament, and excellent workmanship.

Cooperation between the Vologda Region and Denmark started in 2012. Employees of the Vologda Museum of Lace visited Denmark, saw the lace collection and exhibitions in September 2013 on the invitation of the director of the museum in Tønder. In 2015 examples of Danish lace masterpieces dating back from the 17th till the 20th centuries were presented in the exhibition “Danish Lace: History and Present”. The Vologda Museum of Lace featured the greatest masterpieces from Tønder.
