Several dozens of black-and-white landscapes, portraits and candid shots will tell residents and guests of Vologda about modern Kolyma. The exhibition «Kolyma of Shalamov and Today» will be opened in the Сentre of Сulture «Red Corner» on June 19 within the framework of the Festival «Fourth Vologda» about the creative work of Varlam Shalamov.

Every displayed picture will be supplemented with a fragment of the text from the Shalamov’s book «Kolyma Tales». It is the comprehension of what the writer has seen and gone through within 17 years spent in the Gulag camp.

In August 2014, photo artist Emil Gataullin, winner of the Alfred Fried Photography Award and the national prize «Best Photographer», went on a tour of the legendary Shalamov’s places – the miners’ settlement of Kadykchan, the Spokoyny mine and others. His works were exhibited in Russia, France, Austria and Lithuania.

During the Festival «Fourth Vologda», the author of the display «Kolyma of Shalamov and Today» will tell about photographing in the Magadan region and will give a lecture about fine-art photography «Off-Camera». Emil Gataullin will share his experience regarding selection of photos and cooperation with people whose pictures he takes.

It is worth reminding that the Literary Festival «Fourth Vologda» will be held in our city from June 18 to 21. Representatives of theatre society, famous literary critics and amateurs of Varlam Shalamov’s creative work from all over the country will take part in it. Actor Alexander Filippenko will become a distinguished guest of the festival.
