More than 350 applications not only from Russia but also from Germany, Croatia, Poland, France, Finland, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Australia and other countries were received in the Vologda Lace Museum during spring months.
The participants of the contest were asked to perform a lace bird based on the project of the local government «Vologda Oblast – Soul of Russia’s North». A bird depicted on it is typical for Slavic and Finno-Ugric mythology, and later for Christianity. The bird is perceived as a symbol of the soul and the spirit, the manifestation of the divine, the highest state of spirit and mind.
Hand-made lace birds submitted to the contest from different parts of the world are decorated with beads and coloured stones. All the works are of impressive individuality and astonished everyone by fine craftsmanship of the master lace-makers.
